VAN DUZER CORRIDOR AVA GRANTED OFFICIAL STATUS
Van Duzer Vineyards Unique Growing Conditions Recognized

December 14, 2018 – Willamette Valley, Oregon

The Van Duzer Corridor is the newest Oregon AVA established by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).  A final ruling defines this unique grape-growing region within the Willamette Valley characterized by coastal winds that funnel from the Pacific ocean, buffering the corridor’s microclimate and controlling temperatures year round. This wind stimulus contributes to finished wine quality by generating thicker skins, deeper color and a more generous tannin structure.  

Van Duzer Vineyards was among the first founded in the namesake region, with plantings as early as 1983.  “We were taken with the potential of this area from the beginning,” remarked proprietor Carl Thoma.  “The Van Duzer Corridor AVA designation confirms what we’ve believed all along and will bring continued recognition as a premier site for growing world-class Pinot Noir.”

Burgundy born winemaker, Florent Merlier, has been with Van Duzer Vineyards for nearly a decade and confirms the unique terroir of the newly recognized AVA.  “Conditions here allow us a more hands-off approach and make it easier to maintain sustainable growing practices when facing weather challenges.  The Van Duzer winds help limit disease pressure naturally; air flow lowers humidity in the fruiting zone, which reduces the likelihood that fungus will develop. The winds also buffer extreme temperatures in either direction throughout the growing season.  Clusters reach full phenolic maturity while maintaining optimal sugar/acid balance.” 

Thoma invested in Oregon more than 20 years ago and has since built a winery on site at Van Duzer Vineyards in 2006, expanded the brand nationwide, and released a second label, Smith & Perry, in 2016. Van Duzer Vineyard’s brand will soon celebrate 30 years in business.

Van Duzer Vineyards and Winery is located in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  Owned by Carl and Marilyn Thoma, the estate is planted to 83+ acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Syrah. Visitors are welcome in the tasting room daily, 11am – 5pm.
