Product Description: 2002 Estate Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
WINEMAKER'S NOTES The release of the 2002 Estate Pinot Noir heralds the achievement of a major goal in the growth of Van Duzer, that of producing consistent high quality across the entire property. With the maturation of the vineyards, we are experiencing a more balanced, richer quality in the grapes and the wine grown on our estate. The 2002 Estate Pinot Noir sets a new benchmark for the Van Duzer style with its berry and black cherry aromatics set against a background of spices, violets and smokiness. The flavors of blackberry, currant and spice last through the long, rich finish.
ACCOLADES 91 - Spectator Selections "Dramatically aromatic, brimming with black cherry, hinting at smoke and spices as the flavors play against firm tannins. Needs time to soften, then fasten your seatbelt."
Harvey Steiman Wine Spectator May 31, 2004 "A west wind cools its vineyards, producing a pinot noir that brims with black cherry, smoke and spices."
Newsweek August 17, 2004 The Top 100 "Made entirely from the winery's 77-acre estate vineyard, this red represents a blend of three clonal selections - Dijon and Pommard from Burgundy and Wadenswil from Switzerland. It undergoes malolactic fermentation in a mix of new and used French oak barrels before being bottled."
Wine Spectator December 31, 2004
THE VINEYARDS The Van Duzer Estate Vineyard has come of age with the 2002 vintage. Our 77 acre vineyard, devoted primarily to Pinot Noir, has hit its stride after 5 years of intense labor, precise agricultural practices and the most modern technology. Planted to nine different clones of Pinot Noir, including Pommard, Wädenswil and the new Dijon clones, the variety in the fields allows us to optimize the quality on a site-by-site basis.
For the fifth year in a row, Oregon experienced remarkably perfect weather for wine growing. The dry summer triggered early ripening, and well-timed, moderate rainfall in the the fall allowed full maturity and development of flavors prior to the harvest which finished October 22.

WINEMAKING With four previous years of experimentation to look back upon, winemaking for the 2002 Estate Pinot Noir was a very straightforward process for this vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted for quality, then destemmed and placed into tanks for cold maceration to extract bright colors and soft tannins. A variety of yeast types were used, each chosen for certain attributes and to preserve the nature, or "terroir", of our Pinot Noir. When fermentation was completed, the wine was transferred to a mix of 33% new, 33% once-used and 33% neutral French oak barrels to undergo malo-lactic fermentation and then age for 10 months prior to bottling.
